
Modern Calligraphy 101: Learn the Alphabet

Are you calligraphy curious? Hand-lettered calligraphy is a great skill to compliment your other creative practices. Once you learn the eight basic shapes that make up the modern calligraphy alphabet, you’ll be well on your way to making beautiful lettering. Taught by Portland artist Molly Chidsey, she will provide a workbook to guide you along on this process.
In this introductory workshop, you will learn:
1. What modern calligraphy is and how is it different from handwriting
2. How to use a brush pen to create thick and thin contrasting lines that define calligraphy
3. The eight essential shapes that make up the calligraphy alphabet
4. How to form the letters of the lowercase alphabet (miniscules) and an overview of the upper-case alphabet (majuscules)
Supplies needed:
One small-tip brush pen, such as Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Touch (hard tip or soft tip ok)
Smooth, semi-translucent marker paper (Canson or similar)
Smooth tracing paper (Canson or similar)

If you cannot attend a class, a 72 hour notice prior to the start of the class via email or phone is required for a full refund of the class fee. After that there is no refund.
