Growing Gardeners Kids’ Corner

December 21 @ 9:00 am

Families with kids of all ages are invited to join Central Gorge Master Gardeners and community volunteers at the FISH Food Bank Garden, where fresh produce is grown for our neighbors who experience food insecurity. Make this a family volunteer project to help our neighbors in need while learning, having fun, and meeting other community members.

Each Saturday this summer (except holiday weekends) from 9 AM to noon, volunteers will be able to learn sustainable gardening practices from Master Gardeners while working in the FISH Food Bank Garden.

Master Gardener volunteers will also present the Growing Gardener Kids’ Corner this Saturday from 10-11 AM. These free hands-on sessions are designed for kids to learn about gardening. Topics to be presented are the Three Sisters combination planting method, composting and worms. While kids are learning and having fun at the Growing Gardeners Kids’ Corner, adults can join other volunteers in the garden. There’s a playground next to the garden so that all kids can learn and play!

The FISH Food Bank Garden is located at 1130 Tucker Rd, Hood River, OR, and is a community project that provides fresh produce and herbs to local residents who experience food insecurity. This is a project of the Spirit of Grace Church, FISH Food Bank, Central Gorge Master Gardeners, and community volunteers. Last summer, a total of 1200 pounds of fresh produce was grown for FISH Food Bank clients in this garden and the garden has recently been expanded to accommodate the increased need for fresh, locally grown food. Some crops have already been planted for this seasons’ harvest, and more will be planted soon. Community involvement in this project is key to its success, and all are invited to volunteer on Saturday mornings. Come when you can, leave when you must.
