CGOA presents Folksong Tapestry, w/ Voci Community Choir

April 25 @ 7:00 pm

The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents
Folksong Tapestry, with the Voci Community Choir
April 25 at 7 PM and April 27 at 2 PM
Hood River Valley Christian Church
975 Indian Creek Rd., Hood River, OR

The Voci Community Choir, a Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association vocal ensemble, is thrilled
to announce their upcoming concert, Folksong Tapestry. This dynamic and heartfelt
performance will explore the rich tradition of storytelling through song, featuring folk music from
around the world. Audiences will experience an evening filled with beloved melodies, poignant
ballads, and lively tunes that celebrate the universal human spirit.
Under the artistic direction of Dan Kenealy, Voci has become known for its captivating
performances and diverse programming. Folksong Tapestry will take listeners on a musical
journey across cultures and continents, featuring folk songs that convey stories of love, longing,
work, and community.
The program will include:
● Korean folk classic "Arirang" arranged by Russell Robinson
● The haunting German lullaby "In Stiller Nacht" by Johannes Brahms
● Spirited sea shanties like What Shall We Do with a Drunken Sailor? arranged by David
Eddleman
● American folk favorites such as Shenandoah arranged by James Erb and Nine
Hundred Miles arranged by Philip E. Silvey
● Vibrant international selections including the Spanish carol Gatatumba and the Irish
medley An Irish Washerwoman arranged by Linda Taylor
"This concert really feels like weaving together a musical tapestry," said Kenealy. "Each folk
song is like a different thread — some bright and lively, some soft and somber — but together
they create something beautiful and deeply human. It’s amazing how these songs, from so
many different places, can still speak to our shared experiences today."
In addition to global folk traditions, Folksong Tapestry will also showcase pieces that highlight
the daily lives of past generations, such as Dashing Away With the Smoothing Iron, an English
folk song about the domestic rhythm of washing and ironing clothes, and Bring Me Little Water,
Silvy, an American folk song made famous by Huddie Ledbetter (Lead Belly). The concert will
also feature When the Roses Come Again, a nostalgic American ballad, and the beloved
Scottish tune The Water is Wide.

Audience members will have the opportunity to hear tender love songs, raucous work songs,
and reflective spirituals — all woven together to create a stunning tapestry of sound. Families,
music lovers, and community members alike are invited to join Voci for this memorable
celebration of cultural heritage and human connection.
Tickets for Folksong Tapestry can be purchased at gorgeorchestra.org or at the venue on the
