THE BIOGRAPHY OF CHRISTOPHER (“CHRISSY”) LANCASTER:
Chrissy Lancaster is an electro-acoustic cellist composer living in Brooklyn, New York. He has composed over 50 full-length works for concert Dance, Theater and Film. His personal work has focused on live performances and the incorporation of technology into songwriting and musical performance.

Chrissy’s music merges his classical music training with his love of Pop music, technology, and innovation. He’s known for his raw physical approach to the cello and his emotional connection with the audience. Chrissy uses the entire potential of his instrument to create a myriad of sounds. Using pickups and amplification, Chrissy captures the nuances of the entire instrument turning the wooden body into thumping drums and isolating the quiet micro-tones of the strings into complex emotional cries.

Not only does he fully utilize the cello, he also uses his entire body to create his music. One foot operates effects pedals that take sound and transform it into virtually anything he can imagine. Calling forth images of wild animals, guitars, cities, synthesizes, oceans, the afterlife, and alien landscapes. Meanwhile, he uses his other foot as a sampler to record his live sound and build it into multi-layered morphing living compositions. This combination makes every performance of his a singular experience for the listener that will never be repeated.

Chrissy has been the music director and composer for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and the Staccato Contemporary Dance Company in Rio de Janerio. In 2010 he had the privilege of perform his music for President Obama at the Kennedy Center Honors. Other noteworthy venues include Lincoln Center NYC, BAM NYC, Saddler’s Wells London, Teatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro, the Royal Ballet Copenhagen, Theatre National de Chaillot Paris, Lyon Opera Ballet, Yerba Buena Arts Center San Francisco, Korzo Theater Den Haag, Madison Square Garden NYC, Bently Reserve San Francisco, Royce Hall UCLA, UC Berkeley, Barclay Center Irvine, Hendershot Gallery NYC. Chrissy also created the score for the Documentary “Flex is Kings,” about the Flexing community and the dance style developed in Brooklyn, NYC. In 2019, he will also be composing a new score for the Theater Play ‘Jayne Eyre’ for the Goteborg Folkteatern.
